Mi-A-Qu-A, Miami chief portrait

Posted in Primary Sources and Artifacts

This is a portrait of Mi-A-Qu-A, a Miami chief, from "History of the Indian Tribes of North America, with Biographical Sketches and Anecdotes of the Principal Chiefs" by Thomas L. McKenney and James Hall, published in 1854. The book contained portraits of American Indian tribal members from a variety of tribes. The portrait shows the style of dress in the early and mid 1800s including trade goods like silver arm bands, a gorget, and clothing made from European trade cloth.
